What is Multifloral Honey?

There are many different varieties of honey available in the market such as acacia honey, alfalfa honey, avocado honey, basswood honey, eucalyptus honey, and so on categorized by the flower source. Each type of honey tastes different due to a difference in the source.

However, even among the same types of honey, the taste often varies due to differences in climate, elevation, soil quality and so on.

Multifloral honey refers to a type of honey that comes from many different flower sources. In other words, it is a combination of different types of monofloral honey and contains the best attributes of each. At Athena Global, we source the finest quality multi-floral honey straight from the finest apiaries in India.

HOW HONEY IS MADE

Flower &Honey comb

When it comes to honey, naturally the bulk of the work is done by bees. Bees move from flower to flower sucking nectar, which is stored in an extra stomach present in the bee (called a ‘crop’). This alters the nature of the nature of the nectar slightly, and when the bee returns to the beehive, it regurgitates the liquid which is then consumed by another bee. This happens multiple times and the liquid is finally stored in honeycombs and sealed with beeswax, stowed away for consumption in the future.

Extraction and Bottling

Beekeepers ensure that they do not take away all the honey leaving nothing for the bees. The common practice is to leave a third of the honeycomb capped for the bees themselves to feed on. The honeycombs marked out for extraction are put into large drums and rotated so that the honey can be taken without destroying the honeycombs. The honey rolls down the side of the drums passes down a filter which separates the impurities and is collected in containers to be taken to the bottling plant.

Obtaining the Honey

There are several methods that can be employed to obtain the honey from honeycombs such as sweeping away the bees, the use of smoke to drive them away or using a separator board. The beekeepers must wear special clothing while breaking the honeycomb to prevent themselves from getting stung. It is important to test the maturity of the honey before harvesting it. This is done by shaking the honeycomb to see if itis leaking. If it leaks, it means that the honey is not yet ready for harvest and is placed back inside.

Purchase and Storage

The honey is bottled in tightly sealed sterilized jars to prevent the absorption of moisture and fermentation. The bottler sends it to distributors and retailers from where it finds its way to your table. Honey can be stored at home for extended periods provided the proper process is followed. It should be stored at room temperature (and not in a refrigerator), in a dark area, protected from water and impurities. Honey might crystallize if stored for long periods but it can be easily reversed by placing it in a jar of lukewarm water prior to consumption.
